Ahold intends to divest 46 Tops supermarkets in Northeast Ohio. This geographically separate region is no longer considered a core part of Tops' market area, which is concentrated in New York and Pennsylvania. Full Story

The number of organic farms in the U.S. - an estimated 10,000 - is increasing, but not fast enough to keep up with consumer demand for organic products. As a result, organic manufacturers are looking for ingredients outside the U.S. in places like Europe, Bolivia, Venezuela and South Africa, reported TheState.com. Full Story

Kosher food marketer Manischewitz is expanding efforts to reach mainstream shoppers and has launched its first campaign aimed at the general market, reported The New York Times On The Web. The goal is to encourage consumers to ask grocers and other retailers to stock Manischewitz items not in the smaller kosher sections of stores, but in the more heavily trafficked aisles devoted to broad product categories like soup, crackers, noodles and sauces. Equity firm Key Principal Partners is selling Ampac Packaging, LLC to a group led by Prudential Capital Group and Falcon Investment Advisors, reported dBusinessNews. Ampac is a leading producer of high-volume paper and plastic packaging products, including upscale shopping bags for national retailers and other specialty food and consumer packaging products.     Gluten-free foods and beverages sales are expected to top $696 million in 2006, with an expected growth of 25% over the next four years, according to a report from Packaged Facts. The demand has grown as more than three million Americans have been diagnosed with celiac disease. Full Story

    Kellogg's has big ambitions to target China, but typical western breakfasts, such as cold cereal with milk, are not popular in Asia. As a result, the firm will tailor its products to local tastes and plans to buy a local, yet unnamed, Chinese food firm and is looking at buying other local cereal and snack firms for regional growth, reported BBC News.     Australian wine exports rose 12% to a record 738 million liters in the 2006 financial year, but the average price per liter fell by 9%. Growth in exports to China and Sweden were key contributors to the rise in total volume and value. Full Story

    Tesco is remodeling its Tesco Express convenience stores in the UK to try to make them more acceptable to local communities. The new-look will be part of Tesco's community plan, a 10-point program designed to make it a "good neighbor" and underline its green credentials, reported Guardian Unlimited. Full Story

    The amount of fat most Canadians eat on a daily basis has declined over the past 30 years, but about one in five still get too many of their calories from fat, according to Statistics Canada's Canadian Community Health Survey on nutrition. Many Canadians, especially children, aren't eating nearly enough vegetables and fruit and also aren't meeting the daily recommended intake for calcium-rich dairy products, reported National Post.     It may be possible to develop a blood test for mad cow and related disease in both humans and animals, according to a recent study published in journal Science. This test would allow animals to be tested before they enter the food system. Full Story

    Rising fuel prices are taking a toll on Michigan's agriculture industry by eating away at profits and forcing many farmers to spend huge amounts on fuel and petroleum-related supplies, but farmers can't pass the expense to consumers. The effect, federal officials say, will be a drop in per-farm income this year, reported Detroit Free Press. Full Story

    Aid will be provided to West Coast commercial salmon fishermen after facing their worst season due drought and natural disaster. This summer federal regulators allowed fishing only in May and set weekly catch limits to ensure the return of salmon this fall to reproduce, as a result fishermen are at only 4% of their normal rate, reported The Los Angeles Times.
