Pepsi Co is continuing its push for a larger share of the healthful snack food market. The company wants to alter its portfolio so that they have 50% of their products in what they consider health and wellness products and 50% in indulgence products, according to the company's chairman and CEO, reported AZCentral.com. Protein bars from a company called be unlimited ltd. were introduced in all 1,400 Target stores in the U.S., reported Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Sales of protein bars - categorized as nutritional/intrinsic health value bars - were at $519.3 million last year in the U.S. at supermarkets, drugstores and mass-merchandise outlets, not including Wal-Mart, according to Information Resources. The virulent H5N1 strain of bird flu could reach the Americas in six to 12 months or even sooner, as infected wild birds migrate toward the Arctic and Alaska, according to the UN bird flu chief, reported Chicago Sun-Times. Full Story

Yogurt could become an even healthier snack with the addition of C-Trim, a heart-healthy ingredient derived from oats and barley containing the soluble fiber beta-glucan. C-Trim is one of several new products created by ARS scientists from across the country that cut calories, bolster food's nutritional value, or do both. Full Story

Washington News

Michigan's Senate voted unanimously to raise the minimum wage from $5.15 an hour to $6.95 Oct. 1. It would again increase to $7.15 on July 1, 2007, and to $7.40 on July 1, 2008. The House could hold a vote to approve the measure as soon as Mar.14. Michigan could become the 17th state to increase its minimum wage set by the federal government, according to The Detroit News. Federal fish managers are recommending not allowing salmon fishing from California to Oregon this season, after concerns that fewer mature chinook salmon are spawning to replace the fish that are dying off. The suggestion would shut down fishing along 700 miles of coastline, from Oregon's Cape Falcon to California's Point Sur, just south of San Francisco, reported SignOnSanDiego.com. Full Story

Worries about bird flu have dampened trade prospects for American poultry producers who already are facing lower prices. The U.S. should export 5.3 billion pounds of poultry this year, down 95 million pounds from last month's projections, according to USDA. Full Story, View Report

California tomato farmers can expect on average $59 a ton for their tomatoes this season, up from $50 last year. The California Tomato Growers Association has been negotiating with the state's canneries and it is expected that improved demand will lead to increased plantings this year. Muddy fields have slowed early tomato planting in much of the San Joaquin Valley, reported California Farm Bureau Federation.
