Today's Specialty Food Consumer 2008: A Webinar (Rebroadcast)

(NASFT) and Mintel presented a webinar filled with facts on Today's Specialty Food Consumers, the fastest growing segment in the retail food industry. You'd be surprised who is buying these products. Here are some of the facts that were presented:

  • Cold beverages and coffee tie as the most purchased category, bought by 57% of specialty food consumers
  • Five categories-cold beverages, coffee, olive oils/other specialty oils, cheese and chocolate-are purchased by more than half of specialty food consumers
  • Almost six out of 10 purchase specialty foods for everyday meals at home
  • 22.9% of the food dollar of specialty food consumers goes to specialty foods
  • Consumers between the ages of 25 and 34 spend the highest percentage of their food dollars on specialty foods
  • Nearly three-quarters of specialty food consumers also purchase natural foods
  • 86% of specialty food consumers like to experiment with new recipes, yet 80% say that family food traditions are important to them
  • 28% of specialty foods purchased are local, and 24% are international
  • Cultural activities are important to specialty food consumers, with more than three-quarters reporting that they visit museums, art galleries and the theater
  • 64% of specialty food consumers regularly exercise
