Wild Oats Markets is having a major buy-one, get-one-free sale, the latest example of the natural/organic retailer's efforts to become more price-competitive, reported Supermarket News. Through Mar. 15, Wild Oats is putting more than 200 items on sale. Full Story

Publix Super Markets plans to convert two Florida stores to a Hispanic-themed supermarket format called Publix Sabor. The stores, scheduled to open in May, will feature expanded offerings in the Hispanic food and grocery categories and be staffed with bilingual associates. Full Story

Cold Stone Creamery plans to open its first store in July in Amherst, NY. The average sales for a Northeast store are 53% higher than the systemwide average, according to Cold Stone. Stores in the South, however, have sales slightly below average. Some of the top sales are from stores in Alaska and Minnesota. Cold Stone has 900 stores in 47 states, the major exceptions being Wyoming, Vermont and New Hampshire, according to The Buffalo News. Full Story

Latina Foods plans to open a 42,000-sq. ft. Latina Foodland Fresh Market in Buffalo, NY. Latina Foods has four retail stores in the region, plus a distribution center and a meat processing facility. The unintentional contaminant acrylamide in certain foods may be of public health concern since it has been shown to cause cancer in animals, according to a summary report by a Joint Expert Committee of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The report, by a committee of 35 experts from 15 countries, called for continued efforts to reduce acrylamide in food. Full Story Full Report



The Senate voted to overturn the Bush administration's decision to allow Canadian cattle into the country nearly two years after they were banned because of mad cow disease. The White House said President Bush would veto the measure if it ever reached his desk, warning that continuing to refuse Canadian beef would damage efforts to persuade other countries to buy U.S. beef, reported The Chicago Sun-Times. USDA Secretary Mike Johanns was "very disappointed in [the] vote by the U.S. Senate to disapprove the rule submitted by the USDA to establish minimal risk regions and resume trade in Canadian beef and cattle under 30 months of age." Full Release

Driven by ethnic foods, takeout traffic at independent casual-dining restaurants was up 6% in 2004, according to a study released by The NPD Group. Asian foods, pizza, pasta, Mexican food and shellfish were the top five categories ordered for takeout across the casual-dining channel last year. Beaner's Gourmet Coffee will open a store this month in Mobile, AL and will open units later in the year in Georgia and South Carolina, its first foray out of the Midwest market, reported Lansing State Journal.
