Session I (Recorded) includes an Overview
of Food Labeling from a legal perspective and how we will start things
off! Throughout this introduction, the audience will be acquainted with
proper protocol on establishing "correct" food labels and ways to avoid
costly mistakes. This will be followed by a lively discussion on the chaotic
state of food labeling and why the need is ever-present for reform measures.
Legislative and regulatory recommendations will be offered to those in
attendance.
Session II (Recorded) will offer an
opportunity to explore all the 'Tough Spots' of food labeling, including,
but not limited to, Allergens, Natural and Organic claims. Unique features,
including dual language and/or bilingual labeling and examining specific
state issues/regulations on labeling, are subject areas requiring particular
attention which will be discussed. Advertising complexities and how they
are applicable to the food industry will set the tone for another segment
during Session II. Understanding enforcement policies - substantiating
claims, deceptive practices, nutritional and environmental claims, comparative
advertising claims - will be examined in depth. Discussions will also
address website advertising and labeling.
Session III (Recorded) discusses the
HOT topics for 2010 and beyond. Dr. Jessica Leighton, Senior Advisor for
Science in the Office of Foods/Office of Commissioner at FDA,was the keynote
speaker. Dr. Leighton addressed FDA's Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labeling
Initiative and Planned Reforms of the Nutrition Facts Panel. A review
of Structure/Function claims, as well as drug and disease claims was addressed
in this session. Also included was an update from the FDA on Gluten-free
and Menu-labeling. As an added benefit, there is a special segment on
Restaurant/Food Service Establishment Labeling. Included in this segment
are nutrition labeling guidelines and a discussion of mandatory and voluntary
programs. Nutrient content and health claim issues will be explored.
