46% of restaurant franchisees expect to add to their unit counts in
2010, according to a study conducted by SunTrust Robinson Humphrey
Inc. Approximately 19% plan to close stores. Casual-dining chains
were less optimistic about 2010 than quick-service operators, reported

Some
18% of CPG consumers bought lower-priced brands in the past two
years, according to McKinsey research. Of the consumers who switched
to less expensive products, 46% stated they performed better than
expected, and the large majority of these consumers noted the performance
of such products was much better than expected. As a result, 34% of
the switchers stated they no longer preferred higher-priced products,
and an additional 41% stated that while they preferred the premium
brand, it "was not worth the money." Full

value and flavor are three trends in the convenience store channel
with staying power, according to Catherine Porter, senior customer
marketing manager for c-stores at Sara Lee Foodservice. Although the
company is registering a decline in morning business, lunch, afternoon
and weekend visits are increasing, noted the executive, reported Convenience

than in any other period Kroger's chief executive David Dillon could
recall. "The [economic] environment is a new game. I have never seen

Market News
The
Florida all orange forecast, at 135 million boxes, is down 1%
from the previous forecast and down 17% from last season's final utilization.
Early, midseason and navel varieties in Florida are forecast at 69.0
million boxes, unchanged from October but 18% lower than last season.
Meanwhile, pecan production is forecast at 301 million-lbs. (utilized,
in-shell basis), down 3% from the October forecast but 55% above the
2008 production. Crop
