Yum Brands, Inc.'s company-owned restaurants will place calorie information on their menu boards by Jan. 1, 2011. Yum Brands will also introduce lower-calorie and healthier products in its restaurant chains, will not advertise its products on television programs specifically aimed at children under 12 years old, and will launch national online exercise programs to help educate consumers about maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Examining buying habits in certain segments characterized as environmentally sensitive, IRI stated that purchases are often unaffected by the environmental impact of products. Fifteen more Chinese dairy companies were identified as producing milk products contaminated with melamine. An additional 31 batches of Chinese milk powder were found tainted with the chemical, according to data on the food safety administration's website. The new batches being tested were mostly milk powder products for adults, reported The Associated Press. Full Story The first lawsuit against Sanlu Group Co. was filed by the Chinese parents of a one-year-old boy sickened by tainted milk powder, seeking $21,913 in compensation, reported Bloomberg.com. California became the first state in the nation to require nutritional menu labeling, following Governor Schwarzenegger's signature of SB 1420. The bill provides for a two-year phase-in period, with brochures containing nutritional information required at the point of sale and drive-throughs beginning July 1, 2009, and posting of calorie information on menus and indoor menu boards beginning Jan. 1, 2011. Any restaurant with 20 or more locations in California will be affected. Full Story A San Francisco judge rejected an appeal by Walgreens to temporarily halt the city law forbidding the sale of cigarettes in drug stores that is scheduled to go into effect Oct. 1. Walgreens will appeal the decision, according to an attorney, reported The San Francisco Chronicle. Louisiana sweet potato growers will lose 50% of their crop because of prolonged saturated ground conditions that cause the tubers to rot in the fields, according to estimates by LSU AgCenter. About 90% of Louisiana's 16,000 acres of sweet potatoes were affected by hurricanes Gustave and Ike, and the estimated revenue loss for sweet potato growers due to Gustav alone is $33.5 million, reported The Shreveport Times. Full Story California egg production increased in August, as well as the price farmers earn for their eggs. Production of eggs increased six million from July.
