Branded
food manufacturers are making some inroads on private label brands,
according to Nielsen data utilized by Citigroup. For the four-week
period ended Sept. 5, branded food manufacturers gained 20 basis points
of dollar market share from private-label brands over the same period
last year, marking the first time since late 2006 they have gained
share. The share gains stemmed from food makers sticking to price
increases in their branded food, despite lower ingredient and energy
costs, as well as more stable volume shipments, the analysts noted.
The data does not include Wal-Mart sales figures, reported MarketWatch.

Canadian Tire Corp will make
a decision on its food strategy in 2010, according to Reuters.
The company plans to open more "smart store" formats, which
feature a small selection of groceries and may incorporate more products
in coming years, according to Canadian Tire president Mike Arnett.
"We're testing food in these stores, not to see how much food we can
sell at lower margins than our average general merchandise, but to
see what that does in terms of changing traffic patterns to the store,"
noted the executive. "What I would say about food is I like what we
have seen in the first five stores."

Washington News
A
federal judge overturned government approval of Monsanto's "Roundup
Ready" sugar beets. U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White in San Francisco
found USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service violated environmental
law by failing to take a "hard look" at whether Roundup Ready sugar
beets would eventually share their genes with other crops. Noting
that pollen from genetically altered sugar beets could be blown by
the wind long distances to related crops, such as chard and table
beets, the judge ordered the agency to produce an environmental impact
statement examining the issue. It was not immediately clear what impact
the ruling would have on the U.S. sugar crop, about half of which
comes from Roundup Ready sugar beets, reported The Associated Press.

Potato farmers, researchers and industry representatives are trying
to find a new potato variety for McDonald's french fries. McDonald's,
which buys more than 3.4 billion-lbs. of U.S. potatoes annually, still
relies on the Russet Burbank for many of its fries, but socially conscious
investors want McDonald's to help cut pesticides to protect the environment
and farmworker health. McDonald's is scrutinizing the Bannock Russet,
a 10-year-old potato variety bred originally in Idaho that is not
as susceptible to disease as Russet Burbanks, according to The
Associated Press. Full
