Worldwide, about 60% of consumers are stocking cupboards with more store brands as a result of the economic downturn, according to a survey across 55 countries. Fully 88% of shoppers globally intend to keep buying private label even after the economy improves, noted Nielsen. Full Story

Japan is the world's second leading beef importer by value, behind the U.S., noted ERS. In 2009, Japan imported over $470 million in U.S. beef products (down from $1.6 billion in 2003 prior to trade restrictions). Japan's domestic production is a very important market for U.S. feedstuffs exports, with over $740 million imported to feed beef cattle in 2007 (the latest year with available data). Most of the new consumption was met by imports because domestic beef production in Japan is expensive. ERS Report

Health News

Neither low doses of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), found in fish oil, nor of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), derived from nuts and several vegetable oils, provided any benefit to the vast majority of heart patients, according to Dutch research published in New England Journal of Medicine, reported HealthDay. Cargill Meat Solutions Corp. issued a voluntary recall of approximately 8,500-lbs. of ground beef because the products have the potential to be contaminated with E. coli. Full Story


Queseria Chipilo is voluntarily recalling of Oaxaca String Cheese, Queso Fresco, Queso Fresco and Hoja De Platano because the products have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Full Story

Market News

The national recall of eggs from Iowa is providing California egg farmers with an opportunity to expand business. Last year, California had just 19 million egg-laying hens, making it the sixth-largest producer in the nation, compared to 41 million egg-laying hens in 1971. Arnie Riebli, a fourth-generation egg producer in Sonoma County, expects about a 5% to 10% increase in sales because of the recall, reported The Fresno Bee. Full Story (Free Registration Required)
