Fresh ingredients, additional health benefits and more environmentally-friendly packaging should be top priorities to manufacturers developing new food products, according to a study by Ipsos Marketing, Global Consumer Goods. "Taste, convenience and product difference - aspects that were probably more characteristic of food product drivers towards the end of the last millennium - are taking a back seat in a world now more focused on making a positive impact on freshness and health as well as the sustainability of the planet," stated Ipsos executive vice president David Pring. DineWise, Inc. completed a strategic asset acquisition of home meal replacement company Home Bistro Foods, Inc. DineWise, a national chef prepared meal company, acquired Home Bistro's customers, prepared meal inventory, gourmet recipes and intellectual property. Full Story

PepsiCo's Frito-Lay North America division and Jack Link's entered into an agreement in which Frito-Lay will sell and distribute a new line of meat snacks under the MATADOR by Jack Link's brand. Full Story

Recipes prepared in food company test kitchens and printed on labels might be on the verge of a comeback. The resurgence is due in part to the returned popularity of cooking at home. Kellogg's Rice Krispie Treats, Chex Party Mix and Ritz Cracker's Mock Apple Pie are among those referred to as "holy grail recipes" by test kitchen veterans, reported The Chicago Tribune. More than 100 Long Island businesses will be supplying food, beverages, wine, transportation, candy and snacks and hospitality for the U.S. Open in Bethpage, NY. Just about everything will be from Long Island: the wines, lettuce, mustard, bagels, potato chips, chocolates and dry fruits. That's the way the caterer that is servicing the 45 corporate tents wants it. Farmingdale Meat Market Inc. will be supplying 18,000-lbs. of deli products, including corned beef, pastrami, turkey and roast beef. It will also provide 8,000 to 10,000-lbs. of hamburger meat and 1,000 to 2,000-lbs. of filet mignon. J. Kings Food Service Professionals will be shipping the produce of 50 to 60 Island businesses, stated chief executive John King. Mr. King expects to do between $500,000 to $1 million in business during the weeks, reported Newsday. Full Story

The resurgence of packed lunches in the recession led to the first increase in UK supermarket bread sales in 35 years, as sales rose 0.5% in the past 12 months, according to TNS. Tesco also reported that sales of white loaves grew by 10%, while products sold as sandwich fillers such as egg mayonnaise or tuna exhibited an annual rise of 32%, reported The Daily Mail. Norovirus and Salmonella were the leading causes of foodborne disease outbreaks in 2006, according to a report released by CDC. The food commodities associated with the largest number of cases of illness in 2006 were poultry (21% of all outbreak-associated cases), leafy vegetables (17%), and fruits-nuts (16%). There were 1,270 reported foodborne disease outbreaks in 2006. Full Story, Full Report

Fresh Del Monte is set to invest up to $5.1 million in expanding its banana production operations in the Brazilian state of Ceara following last year's flooding on plantations in the Rio Grande do Norte region, which cost an estimated $50 million and cut exports by 50%, reported fruitnet.com. Italian tomato production may experience a dip in production when the full impact of the Common Agricultural Policy reform is felt, likely to be in 2012, noted FAS. This potential dip in production may increase opportunities for U.S. exports of fresh tomatoes. The bulk of production is used for processing, as are the majority of its imports. FAS Report
