Robert S. Ukrop created a new venture, Ukrop's Homestyle Foods Inc., that produces prepared foods and baked goods. The company's main customer is Martin's Food Markets. Mr. Ukrop plans to expand its reach to other chains and markets over time, reported Richmond Times-Dispatch. Full Story

Annual sales of the Sunny Delight Beverages Co.'s Elations jumped to $75 million from $12 million in 2008 and could make up 10% of the company's annual revenue by the end of the year. ALDI is reportedly the first company in Australia to join a labeling program that details the amount of greenhouse gases generated by a product. ALDI will apply the label to its olive oil range, reported The Courier-Mail. Full Story

Demand for low-fat foods is rising in China as some 30% of the adult population is believed to be obese. Sales of soy and fruit bars are growing "really fast," stated Michael Zhang, chairman of Otsuka (China) Investment. Soyjoy sales in China will overtake those in the U.S. this year, reported Bloomberg BusinessWeek. Full Story

Drinking three or more cups of tea a day is as good as drinking plenty of water and can also protect against heart disease and some cancers, claims research published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, reported BBC News. Full Story

About 30% to 40% of the apple crop and 60% to 70% of the pear crop was destroyed in West Michigan after a cold snap came on the heels of unseasonably warm temperatures in early April that caused trees to bud early, reported MLive.com. Full Story Blueberry crops in the region were also damaged by frost. Sodoni Blueberry Farm owner Frank Coles stated 15% to 20% of his crop was damaged, reported MLive.com. Full Story


The Florida all orange forecast, at 134 million boxes, is up 2% from the previous forecast but down 18% from last season's final utilization. FCOJ yield forecast for the 2009-2010 season is 1.55 gallons per box at 42.0 degrees Brix, unchanged from the May 1 forecast but down 7% from last season's final yield of 1.66 gallons per box. Meanwhile, Georgia's peach crop is forecast at 42,000 tons, up 31% from last year's crop. Production of Bartlett pears in California, Oregon and Washington is forecast at 420,000 tons, down 5% from last year. USDA Crop Production
