CVS will double the size of food sections in 3,000 of its 7,000 stores by the end of the year. So far, at least a dozen CVS stores were converted in the Boston area, reported The Patriot Ledger. Full Story

More restaurant chains are offering frozen retail versions as they look for "new revenue streams," stated Robin Lee Allen, executive editor at Nation's Restaurant News. New freezing technologies have improved and have made the grocery's frozen-food aisle almost a "no lose" proposition, stated Bob Garrison, editor of Refrigerated & Frozen Foods, reported USA Today. The Venezuelan government began taking over 18 food and retail distributors June 7, accusing them of irregularities. Authorities have "temporarily occupied" the businesses and will later expropriate them, according to Commerce Minister Richard Canan, reported The Canadian Press. Full Story

Eating dairy foods could help protect the heart, according to research from Sweden published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, reported Reuters. Full Story

Washington News

FDA's abilities to discover potential threats to food safety and prevent outbreaks of foodborne illness are hampered by impediments to efficient use of its limited resources and a piecemeal approach to gathering and using information on risks, according to a report issued by the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council. The report recommends FDA should develop a risk-based approach to regulation, increase coordination with state and other federal agencies and amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to explicitly provide FDA additional authority. Effective June 14, USDA will require all shipments of tomatoes from Canada to be accompanied by an industry-issued "certificate of origin." This requirement is primarily based on USDA's efforts to prevent the entry of tomato leafminer to the U.S. Full Story

Russia is challenging America's supremacy in the global wheat market, reported Bloomberg BusinessWeek. Russia currently exports 14% of the world's wheat, up from 0.5% in 2000. The U.S. share of wheat exports fell from 26% to 19% over the time period. Full Story
