Health Canada's Sodium Working Group intends to set voluntary sodium reduction targets for industry in July in an effort to reduce consumption levels over the next decade, reported Food Navigator USA. Full Story

Canada's major supermarket chains are reducing the amount of Redlist species and adopting sustainable seafood procurement policies, according to a Greenpeace report. The report, Taking Stock: Ranking supermarkets on seafood sustainability, ranks Canada's eight major grocery chains on their efforts to help improve the sustainability of the seafood they buy and sell. Children who consume a Mediterranean diet have a lower risk of developing asthma, but eating three or more burgers a week is linked to a higher risk, claims research published in Thorax, reported BBC News. Full Story

The California Assembly passed legislation prohibiting handing out plastic bags at grocery stores, pharmacies, convenience stores and liquor stores. The bill, AB 1998, still needs state Senate approval, reported The Sacramento Bee. Full Story (Free Registration Required)

Market News

Very large volumes of Mexican mangoes will likely continue well into June. Importers and industry officials hope that improving quality will keep fruit moving and prices stable. Weekly crossings in the second half of May were at or near record levels, with product coming in from multiple growing regions, stated Luis Diaz, salesman for Diazteca Co., reported The Packer Online. Libby's added pumpkin crop acreage this year and expects its canned pumpkin product to return in September, "as long as Mother Nature is cooperative," noted a spokesperson, reported The Washington Post.
