The U.S. food industry can expect a lot of mergers and acquisitions as companies look to gain more revenue and earnings growth and new, innovative products, stated Greg Pearlman, managing director and head of BMO Capital Markets, a speaker at the Reuters Food and Agriculture Summit, reported Reuters. McDonald's is looking to sell all soft drinks, at any size, for $1 this summer, reported Dow Jones. McDonald's wants the $1 drink promotions to run 150 days, starting after Memorial Day, up from 100 days in prior years, according to franchisees. McDonald's is also in early tests on other beverage additions, including frozen lemonade and shakes, both in a small number of stores, reported CSP Daily News. Full Story

Washington News

Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) unveiled the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, providing $4.5 billion in new child nutrition program funding over 10 years. The legislation aims to ensure that all children eligible for nutrition programs are actually participating, improve the quality of meal benefits, and modernize and improve the integrity of the programs. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and 13 other senators introduced the Growing Farm To School Programs Act, which would provide $50 million in startup funds to local schools and districts, through competitive grants, for technical help in connecting school foodservice providers with local small- and medium-sized farms for efficient and cost-effective purchases of locally produced foods for school lunchrooms. Sen. Leahy expects the new bill to be incorporated into a major child nutrition reauthorization bill that is nearing action by the Senate Agriculture Committee. Full Story

A 3.3% decline in U.S. orange juice sales for the four weeks ending Feb. 20 is being attributed to increased pricing. The average OJ price rose 2% from January to $5.47 per gallon. Although last month's average retail price was 3.7% lower than the $5.68 average in February 2009, consumers react more to immediate price rises than the long-term trend, according to Bob Norberg, deputy executive director of research and operations at the Florida Citrus Commission, reported The Lakeland Ledger.
