The U.S. packaged-food and meats business garnered 29% of its sales from foreign markets in 2008, compared with an average of 38% for 23 industry groups followed by Standard & Poor's Capital IQ division. Kraft derived 41% of its $40 billion in sales from foreign markets, not including Canada, reported The Chicago Tribune. Some 81% of U.S. households eat dinner at home and 47% of consumers report eating dinner with everyone in their household every night of the week, according to The NPD Group's Dinnertime MealScape. Dinner is described as a "full or complete meal" by 68% of consumers. About 29% of consumers feel dinner represents more of a "small or mini meal" and 2% view it as a snack. Full Story

Restaurants added more than 460 new breakfast items to their menus in 2009, though half of consumers surveyed in November 2009 are spending less on restaurant breakfasts compared to 2008, according to Mintel. Only one in 10 are spending more, and 47% of survey respondents do not eat breakfast out during the week. Restaurant breakfast and brunch sales fell 3.4% from 2007 to 2009, and the category is expected to grow modestly through 2011, eventually expanding by 13% before 2014. Full Story

Tokyo-based hamburger chain Mos Food Services Inc. may open 200 stores in China in the next five years. Mos Food, which offers rice burgers that use grilled rice patties instead of buns, tailors its menu to suit local preferences with its Taiwan restaurants selling ginger-pork and fried seafood burgers. Mos Food aims to boost the number of Mos Burger restaurants abroad to 1,000 in the next 10 years from about 210 today. It is considering entering South Korea and Malaysia in the year beginning Apr. 1 and may open stores in Europe, North America and Australia, reported Bloomberg.com. Full Story

Men who consumed the most calcium in food were 25% less likely to die over the next decade than their peers who took in the least calcium from food, according to a Swedish study published in American Journal of Epidemiology, reported Reuters. Full Story

Food retailers in Washington, DC are selling roughly 50% fewer plastic and paper bags than they used to give away before the five cents fee took effect Jan. 1, according to Councilman Tommy Wells, the measure's chief sponsor, reported Baltimore Sun. Full Story

Buyers should expect adequate volume for spring promotions of grapefruit, oranges and tangerines, according to Florida fresh citrus shippers.
