PepsiCo Inc.'s Tropicana will raise the price of its gallon-size Pure Premium containers by 5% to 8% as a result of the Florida orange crop freeze. The company will also reduce the jug size of Tropicana Pure Premium orange juice to 59-oz. from 64-oz. The changes will take place in May, reported The Associated Press. Full Story

Individuals who get enough fiber in their diets, particularly from whole grains, may have a lower risk of developing chronic lung disease than those who eat few high-fiber foods, noted a study published in American Journal of Epidemiology, reported HealthDay. Full Story

Washington News

Another class-action lawsuit was launched to challenge Coca-Cola's plan to take over the North American operations of its main bottler. The lawsuit asserts that Coca-Cola, by virtue of its stock ownership and business dealings with bottler Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE), controls and dominates the smaller company. "As a controlling shareholder, Coke owes to CCE's public shareholders a duty of entire fairness," the lawsuit says, according to an online summary. "By virtue of the challenged transaction, Coke has breached this duty. The asset/share exchange is unfair both as to price and process," reported The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Justice Department will hold five public meetings billed as joint "workshops" with USDA on competition issues, with the first focusing on an ongoing formal antitrust investigation of Monsanto Co.'s handling of its herbicide-immune soybean. The Department's antitrust division will invite competitors, farmers, politicians and activists to submit complaints against Monsanto and suggest ways to limit the company's reach, reported The Wall Street Journal. Extraordinary cool and wet weather in Texas continued to slow down all field work and delay corn planting in most of the state, according to Dr. Travis Miller, a Texas AgriLife Extension Service statewide agronomist, reported Southwest Farm Press. Full Story

Cooler than normal February and early March weather in California's desert region could delay harvesting of some commodities. The early peach variety ambercrest could be on market shelves by early April, stated Rick Paul, Sun World International LLC's category director for table grapes and stone fruit, reported The Packer Online.
