If the price of regular soda and other sweetened beverages increased by 18%, individuals would consume an average of 56 fewer calories a day and lose about five pounds a year, claims a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine, reported USA Today. Full Story

Washington News

Groups representing businesses, ports and labor will petition USDA to allow continued shipment of seedless grapes from Chile to flow into ports of the Delaware River next month. Normally, imports of table grapes from Chile are restricted after Apr. 10 in order to permit grape crops from Mexico and Southern California to enter the market, reported The Philadelphia Inquirer. APHIS is adopting as final an interim rule amending the foreign quarantine and user fee regulations by removing the exemptions from inspection for imported fruits and vegetables grown in Canada and the exemptions from user fees for commercial vessels, commercial trucks, commercial railroad cars and commercial aircraft entering the U.S. from Canada. Colony collapse disorder is causing California bee losses varying from 30% to 80%. However, it is too soon to say whether the decline in bee colonies will have any effect on yield, according to Dave Baker, director of member relations at Blue Diamond Growers, reported The Fresno Bee. The Chilean avocado industry was mostly unaffected by the earthquake, according to Chilean Hass Avocado Committee. The Port of Valparaiso, from which most Chilean avocados are shipped, is operating at near 100% capacity, and packing facilities and highways out of avocado-growing regions are in good shape, reported The Packer Online.
