Tim Hortons plans to open approximately 900 locations in North America between 2010 to 2013, with the 300 restaurants planned for the U.S. to focus primarily on existing major regional markets. Branded-food unit sales rose 2.4% for the four-week period ended Feb. 20, compared to a 0.2% decline for the four weeks ended Jan. 23, according to a report released by Credit Suisse analyst Robert Moskow. Store brands also rose 3.2% at retailers, down from a 4% gain in January. Mr. Moskow partly attributes the gains to shoppers stocking up on items before and during winter storms, reported The Wall Street Journal. Full Story (WSJ Subscription Required)

Millennial and Gen X shoppers favor mass supercenters and mass merchandisers over more traditional formats like grocery or drug stores, which remain a draw for the Greatest Generation and Boomers. Millennials also topped the basket value list at grocery stores and mass supercenters while Gen Xers were the biggest spenders at mass merchandisers and drug stores, according to The Nielsen Company. Price Chopper Supermarkets entered into an agreement to purchase six P&C stores from Tops Friendly Markets. Five of the six stores are located in northern New York State. The sixth store is in Lincoln, NH. Full Story

FDA is taking steps to protect the public following the early identification of Salmonella Tennessee in Basic Food Flavors Inc.'s supply of hydrolyzed vegetable protein. New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is pushing for legislation that would require country of origin labeling on all dairy products. Additionally, Sen. Cocoa futures fell to a six-month low in New York on concern that rising supplies may make end-users reluctant to buy at current prices. Cocoa has lost 18% from a 30-year high of $3,510 a ton on Dec. 16 on signs of increasing supplies from West Africa, reported Bloomberg.com. Full Story

Exports of California grapes to Mexico fell 70% after a 45% tariff was enacted after the U.S. government ended a pilot program allowing Mexican trucks on American highways.
