Acute foodborne illnesses cost the U.S. an estimated $152 billion per year in healthcare, workplace and other economic losses, according to a report by the Produce Safety Project, an initiative of The Pew Charitable Trusts at Georgetown University. More than half of consumers evaluate a product's label the first time they purchase it, according to a survey of dietary habits released by FDA. The majority of consumers are skeptical of industry claims such as "low fat," "high fiber," or "cholesterol free" on the front of packages. Full Story
