Wal-Mart is considering switching to private-label spices and tested the idea by replacing McCormick products with generics in some stores. McCormick generates 11% of its revenue from sales to Wal-Mart, mainly with brand-name spices, but private label's market share rose to 14.5% in 2009 from 13.5% in 2008, according to Robert Moskow of Credit Suisse, reported The Wall Street Journal. The Doritos "House Rules" commercial was the most talked about television advertisement on Twitter during the Big Game, according to Squawq. The Doritos brand as a whole received more than 35,000 tweets during the game for its ads. More than 21,000 tweets were received immediately after the "House Rules" spot aired. The Schwan Food Co. is looking to double the size of its foodservice business, which generates $750 million in annual sales. The company is developing new foodservice products, including Mrs. Smith's breakfast pastries and Rising Sun Sushi. Schwan's Food Service Inc. gets about 70% of its sales from noncommercial customers such as schools, hospital cafeterias and the military, reported Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal. Nikken Foods USA, Inc. opened a distribution center in St. Louis, MO. The center, which is 20% larger than its current space, will also house the company's Application Kitchen, a test kitchen used for research and development. Full Story

China will be the largest grocery market in the world by 2014, worth €761 billion, according to IGD. The country will overtake the U.S. for the No. 1 spot; the U.S. grocery market will be worth €745 billion by 2014. India will become the third largest food and grocery market in four years' time, while Russia and Brazil will rank fifth and sixth respectively. Indonesia will enter the top 10 list for the first time by 2014. Full Story

Kirin Holdings ended merger talks with Suntory Holdings. However, "Kirin will keep looking for mergers as part of its growth strategy," noted president Kazuyasu Kato, reported Bloomberg.com. Full Story

The Obama administration will introduce legislation that will require schools to offer more nutritious fare. A proposed ban on candy and sugary beverages in schools is expected as well, according to The New York Times on the Web. Vending machines in schools will have to be stocked with healthy offerings, according to excerpts of a speech provided to the Times that Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will deliver Feb. 8. Understanding FDA's Reportable Food Registry (RFR), a webinar hosted by The Food Institute and Olsson Frank Weeda Terman Bode Matz PC, discussed FDA's current thinking regarding the RFR. The RFR is an electronic portal industry must use to alert the FDA when they find their products might sicken or kill people or animals. The reporting requirement applies to all foods and animal feed regulated by FDA, except infant formula and dietary supplements, which are covered by other regulatory requirements. The Honduran appple market experienced growth over the past three years, increasing its importation of apples from $9.5 million in 2006 to $10.9 million in 2007 and $11.8 million in 2008, noted FAS. The U.S. is the major supplier of apples to Honduras, enjoying a reputation for high quality and having a high level of acceptance. In 2008, the value of U.S. apple exports to Honduras was $7.5 million, with Chile being the second largest exporter of apples to Honduras at a value of $3.5 million. FAS Report
