After several years in decline, merchandising activity (defined as displays, feature ads, feature and display combined and price reduction only) is staging a comeback. On average, 52% of categories are capturing 30% to 49% of their volume with merchandising support. Another 12% now boast merchandising activity levels of 50% to 69%. In 2009, 88% of CPG categories experienced increased merchandising activity in the grocery arena. This shift is illustrative of grocers' efforts to attract and retain consumers that are actively shopping across channels in an effort to get the most for their CPG dollars, according to IRI's Times & Trends, "Price, Promotion & Merchandising: Balancing the Call Between Value and Price Relief." Products with an omega claim registered a 42% increase in sales in 2009 versus the prior year, according to Nielsen. Those with antioxidant claims increased 29% in the period. Gluten-free products registered a 16% increase. Fiber, calcium and probiotic claims all posted a sales rise of 13%. Full Story

About 67% of consumers expect to eat out at least as often in 2010 as they did in 2009, up from 56.9% who stated so last year, according to Restaurants & Institutions’ 2010 New American Diner Study. The percentage of respondents who stated they are more likely to order menu items labeled organic dropped to 17.8% from 22.8% last year; the percentage of those likely to respond to the term “all-natural” fell from 37.8% to 30.6%. Frozen pizza maker Home Run Inn had 1.45% national market share and 22.4% market share in Chicago for the year ended Dec. 26, according to Nielsen Co. Its U.S. sales through conventional grocery channels were $46.1 million, up 16.5% over 2008, for the year ended Dec. 27, according to Information Resources Inc., making it the fastest-growing of the nation's top 10 frozen pizza makers in 2009. In addition, Home Run has a national deal with Costco, and will also be launching frozen pasta dinners and Home Run Inn-branded wine in grocery stores, reported Chicago Tribune. Campbell Soup Company will reduce sodium in its V8 100% vegetable juice by 420 milligrams of sodium per 8-oz. glass, a 12% reduction. Full Story

Market News

Peanut stocks reported in commercial storage on Dec. 31 totaled 3.87 billion-lbs. of equivalent farmer stock, compared with 4.37 billion-lbs. a year ago. Commercial processors utilized 128 million-lbs. of shelled edible grade peanuts during December. Utilization by type was 84.2 million-lbs. for all peanut butter products, 17.3 million-lbs. for peanut candy and 24.9 million-lbs. for snack peanuts. Peanut Stocks and Processing Report

General refrigerated storage capacity in the U.S. totaled 3.79 billion gross cubic feet on Oct. 1, 2009, an increase of 14% since the previous survey was conducted two years ago. While most of the increase was due to increased survey coverage of existing warehouses, some was due to new construction. Usable refrigerated space in general storage was 3.10 billion cubic feet, or 82% of the gross space.
